Like with every other -philia, I'd say that the act in itself isn't "necrophilia", it's "desecration of the dead" or something like that. So to determine whether or not the person is a necrophiliac I'd make a simple rule: If the person is doing it because the zombie is dead, then yes. If the person is doing it despite the fact that the zombie is dead, then no.

It really depends on the type of zombie. Yes, there is more than one type.

The currently popular "hungry dead" zombies are corpses forced into instinctual, repetitive action by a contagion. Sex with these zombies would be necrophilia.

The Voudoun zombie is a living human who has been subjected to a blend of hallucinogenics and narcotics that destroy much of their mental capacity and free will. Not necrophilia, but probably not very fun either.

The vengeful zombie is the body of a person with unfinished business that has been reanimated by their own spirit in order to "set things right." One popular example of this type of zombie is The Crow. Since this zombie exhibits all the usual signs of life and has its own soul it's usually not considered necrophilia when they inevitably hook up with some long lost love who helps them find peace.

The possessed zombie is a corpse that is being controlled by an outside force; usually spirit, demon or necromancer. The body is dead, the soul is gone, and what remains is being used like a meat marionette to take action in the physical world. Sex with these things is definitely necrophilia.

The undying servant type of zombie is a person who is being kept alive in the moment before their death by a powerful necromancer or undead. They have lost some of their free will in the process, they must serve their master, but still retain the memories, emotions and skills they had in life. They cannot be killed because they are always an instant away from death, but no closer. Despite this they are still considered a type of zombie because they are dependent on an outside force to keep them alive. Since they're not actually dead, just undying, then sex with these zombies is not necrophilia.

Or, uh, so I've heard... not that I've put a lot of thought into it...

Huh, actually I hadn't heard of that webcomic OR the red string myth before now. I figured it wasn't a completely original thought, but I didn't know it was a "thing". Very interesting read, BlueRaja!
