I spend too much time worrying if a joke has been “done” or not. You can send yourself crazy obsessing about it and won’t get anything finished. You’re better off just doing the joke/comic and see what happens.
As in SF, “there are no new ideas”. What matters is the execution. That said, excessive borrowing makes for weak art. Being aware of your predecessors is a good thing; callouts like Otter’s are both respectful of other artists, and helpful to those of us who like comparing how different artists handle the same material.
