In the US we mostly only see ring toss being played at amusement parks and carnivals. There is a greater preference for horseshoes and corn-holing. Not quite considered “the pinnacle of backyard summertime entertainment” but still well known.

In Lifeguard training, you’re taught to throw it PAST the drowning person. That way they can (hopefully) grab onto the rope that’s (supposed to be) tied to the ring, and/or the ring itself as you pull it back in. Plus if you try to throw it at them, you might not throw hard enough, and waste precious time.
Looks like our bespectacled protagonist may have MISSED THE BOAT when they were teaching this in Captain School.

Very, very funny! Strikinkly enough, we did this on holiday in Italy a couple of weeks ago. No one was drowning, but we tried to toss a bathing ring and manage it to fit over a moving targets head.

Wonderful! This is fairly well-known in Canada as well, although mostly as a game that is sometimes played when you’re in the first few years of grade school.
The carnival version of this game is carefully constructed to be unwinnable, e.g. the pegs are too close together from the player’s POV, although from the carney’s angle a “ringer” is easy. There used to be versions of this game that could be played at home but since it’s out of copyright, it can’t be overpriced and so is not advertized on TV; as a result, children are not taught that it is “fun”. So I doubt you could get many kids to play it.

I played ring-toss. It’s known but not “popular”. Also, I presume the woman is the girl in the picture, and, her husband (the boy) is off screen. I also presume that the guy with glasses threw the ring at him and missed already, and this is the only one left, and the reason he forgot to tie the rope, was because he remembers them laughing and was distracted.
Then again I also presume that all the guys with glasses are like twins or triplets but there is like thousands of them and they all exploded from the same woman and then it was raining babies, but the wind picked them up and distributed them all over the world.
So perhaps my screwy brain is not the best thing to rely on.
This is another magic one. Awesome! I love it. Such horrible awkwardness and sadness.
So, time for the “Someone dies inside” here?
