Tomato Sauce
Ahh, another cat comic, another casualty. Also, be sure to check out a previous comic with these beloved characters – with even more casualties!

This was a new one on me! After a bit of digging into facts, it seems that Garfield is likely safe: it’s only the stems and leaves of the tomatoes that are highly toxic. To humans too — the reason we started eating tomatoes in the first place was because we learned it from the native South/Central Americans. If the Spaniards hadn’t had the Mayans and Incans let us know (at gunpoint, sadly) that it was safe, we would have rejected tomatoes immediately because of their close resemblance to *deadly nightshade*. =)
Even the toxicity of the leaves is debated: black nightshade, whose fruits are edible, has highly toxic leaves, but tomato, whose fruits are obviously also edible, apparently has only mild toxicity according to http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/29/dining/29curi.html?pagewanted=all — eating a large bowl of tomato greens would be toxic, but munching on a leaf or two as a snack or adding it as a flavorant would be harmless (other than being mostly useless for nutrition, as it’s pretty much pure cellulose).
I guess it was the arsenic after all…
This is tragically fantastic, Kristian.
This actually fooled me, I get my garfield in the same newsreader as my optipess…
Love it :D You should submit this to “Square Root of Minus Garfield”

I’m sure the readers would appreciate some self-made art.
